The British designer known for his fine tailoring tells Lisa Grainger about his bespoke hotel experiences

Soho House New York
, New York
‘It’s buzzy, in a nice way. As soon as you walk through the door, everyone knows your name. Because it’s a members’ club, it feels like home. You arrive, drop your bags on a sofa, and relax. Room 20 is my favourite, with a big bed, wooden floors and lots of wardrobe space.’

Emelisse Hotel, Greece
‘I started going here with my friend Sophia [Neophitou]. It’s like a series of apartments with their own gardens and pools, set around a big bar area. If you want solitude, you can retreat to your villa. It serves delicious Greek specialities, including grilled halloumi and the best seafood.’

Masseria MontelauroPuglia
‘I stayed here with eight friends last summer. You sit at big tables for meals, don’t have to lock your door and there’s a real feeling of community. Each room, with a lovely bed and day bed, opens on to a garden. It feels very chilled – a place where you always make new friends.’

Boundary, London
‘Everyone is super-friendly here and the rooms are filled with fabulous designs (there’s an Andrée Putman room and a Le Corbusier room). You can sit on the rooftop when the weather’s nice. It’s very clean, which is important to me. I’m rather OCD about cleanliness.’

3 Rooms, Paris
‘These are three beautifuli spaces next door to Azzedine Alaïa’s shop and home, where I stay during the Paris fashion shows. Each is like a big apartment, with polished-concrete floors and furniture from the 1950s and 1960s. If Azzedine is about, I eat with him. He’s a brilliant cook and there are always interesting people around the table.’

Verdura Golf & Spa Resort, Sicily
‘I stay here when I visit my family, who live up the road, because I can relax on my own and it has amazing beaches and pools. The rooms are decorated in a clean, spartan way, which I like. And there is delicious Sicilian food such as caponata, and pasta with sardines spiced with wild fennel and cinnamon.’
